We designed and built an accessible pop-up version of the training system NSRL's sport scientists have created for pro athletes to test, correct and improve their running form.
After Running on the treadmill for five minutes, precisely placed cameras would generate a complex data set that were presented back to the participant on 4 screens, giving them a highly personalized illustration of their running pattern.
The most important visual for the user was thier Running Fingerprint, a detailed radar chart illustrating where they sit on a standard deviation scale for six running metrics: How much they Slide, Roll, Crossover, Lean, Reach and Bounce when they run. We then used this personalized data set in real time to generate strengthening exercises and footwear recommendations.
Working with the NSRL team was an exercise in translating data science into digestible information for the every day runner. At the same time, we wanted to make sure that we didn't leave out the typer technical nature of their information collection so we landed in a visual center somewhere between sci-fi futurism and airplane cockpit UI.
At the time of writing, Nike has gone on to build this product into two brick and mortar stores, including Blue Ribbon Sports—the first Nike running store in LA. Hovercraft has been responsible for this brand evolution.
